Pelvic Prolapse

Pelvic organ prolapse is a broad term for any type of vaginal weakness where your pelvic organs slip from their normal position. It is not a normal part of aging and can be addressed with both non-surgical and surgical treatments.  Often women will describe a sense of pelvic fullness or pressure, or can feel as though they are sitting on a ball.  Prolapse can make it difficult to empty your bladder which can increase urinary frequency and also can cause urinary tract infections (bladder infections).

Types of Prolapse

There are generally three types of vaginal prolapse; apical or uterine (the top), cystocele (anterior), and rectocele (posterior). All types can be caused by pregnancy and childbirth, weak tissue, heavy lifting, aging, chronic cough, chronic straining for constipation, or prior pelvic surgery. A cystocele is when the bladder has lost its support and a rectocele is a loss of posterior vaginal support. Women with a rectocele will often have difficulty with constipation or stool evacuation and may even feel like stool gets stuck. It is not unusual for women to have a combination of prolapse types.
